Barkers is thrilled to include a line of wax free mandarins this season!
In today’s market, most produce is covered with an artificial wax material after harvest. This process began in the 1920s in an attempt to prolong the shelf life of the fruit. Now days, the primary reason for waxing produce is for aesthetics. Customers prefer purchasing shiny ‘better looking’ fruit.
The process of washing fruit before sold removes most of the natural wax and protective coating. The wax applied often blocks the pores of the fruit, accelerating the fermentation process and ‘suffocating’ the flesh, which influences flavour.
Benefits of wax-free mandarins:
– Longer shelf life (approx. 5 days)
– Richer taste
